Poetry in Translation (CCCXLIV), James FENTON (n. 1949, Lincoln), UK/ENGLAND: “The Song of the General”, “Cântecul Generalului”

James FENTON
I serve an unjust lord.
Exile is an early tomb.
The heart bleeds dark.
Death is a journey home.
By the bright dew on the hill,
By the sharp blade of the moon,
I shall wake my grieving men.
I shall make that journey soon

“Cântecul Generalului”
Înrolat în război, de pripas,
Exilul îi pare-un mormânt
Inima-i e sângerândă s-ajungă devreme acas’…
Fiindcă Moartea-i de veghe, mergând.
Luna luceşte pe spadă.
Roua, pe frunza deasă
Voi deştepta soldaţii mei, în grabă;
Curând mă voi întoarce-acasă.

Poetry in Translation (CCCXXVI), Eric Otto SIEPMANN (1903-1970) ENGLAND: “Epitaph”, “Epitaf”

March 2nd, 2015 · Comments Off on Poetry in Translation (CCCXXVI), Eric Otto SIEPMANN (1903-1970) ENGLAND: “Epitaph”, “Epitaf” · Books, Famous People, PEOPLE, Poetry, quotations, Translations

Eric Otto SIEPMANN (1903-1970)
„Epitaph”

Here at my desk I mock my fate,
If help comes now, it comes too late,
The valued pictures in my mind,
My sheer neglect, have made me blind.

My dream deserved a steady look,
I failed to put it in a book,
And now, and now I cannot see,
My dream destroyed reality…

No fact consoles me for my flight,
No truth can give me back my sight,
No dream can make me think I see,
No life is left, so bury me.

Constantin ROMAN: “Voices & Shadows of the Carpathians” Postface (Part 1 of 2)

February 20th, 2015 · Comments Off on Constantin ROMAN: “Voices & Shadows of the Carpathians” Postface (Part 1 of 2) · Books, Diaspora, Famous People, International Media, PEOPLE, quotations

“Now, I am a person who likes simple words. It is true, I had realised before this journey that there was much evil and injustice in the world that I had now left, but I had believed I could shake the foundations if I called things by their proper name. I knew such an enterprise meant returning to absolute naiveté. This naiveté I considered as a primal vision purified of the slag of centuries of hoary lies about the world.” (Paul Celan)

Poetry in Translation (CCCXIX): Rudyard KIPLING (1865-1936), ENGLAND – “Mother o’ Mine”, “O, mamă, dulce mamă!”

February 5th, 2015 · Comments Off on Poetry in Translation (CCCXIX): Rudyard KIPLING (1865-1936), ENGLAND – “Mother o’ Mine”, “O, mamă, dulce mamă!” · Famous People, Poetry, quotations, Translations

If I were hanged on the highest hill,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!
I know whose love would follow me still,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!

If I were drowned in the deepest sea,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!
I know whose tears would come down to me,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!

If I were damned of body and soul,
I know whose prayers would make me whole,
Mother o’ mine, O, mother o’ mine!

Dac-al meu trup şi suflet în gheenă ar fi,
Numai ruga ta, mamă, m-ar putea mântui.

O, mamă, dulce mamă!

Poetry in Translation (CCCXVIII): Marjorie Lowry Christie PICKTHALL (1883-1922), ENGLAND/CANADA – “Marching Men”, “Soldaţi”

February 3rd, 2015 · Comments Off on Poetry in Translation (CCCXVIII): Marjorie Lowry Christie PICKTHALL (1883-1922), ENGLAND/CANADA – “Marching Men”, “Soldaţi” · Books, Famous People, International Media, OPINION, PEOPLE, Poetry, quotations, Translations

Under the level winter sky
I saw a thousand Christs go by.
They sang an idle song and free
As they went up to calvary.

Careless of eye and coarse of lip,
They marched in holiest fellowship.
That heaven might heal the world, they gave
Their earth-born dreams to deck the grave.

With souls unpurged and steadfast breath
They supped the sacrament of death.
And for each one, far off, apart,
Seven swords have rent a woman’s heart.
În iarna cerului de plumb,
Văzut-am mii de sfinţi trecând.
Cântau un imn să uite-amarul,
Purtând, cu fruntea sus, calvarul.

Nothing means anything now:
I am alone
— My mind a vacant space,
My heart of stone.

Nimic nu mai contează
Singur sunt
Memoria’m pierdut
Viaţa să-nfrunt.

Even when all small answers build up to
Protection of my spirit, still I hear
Big answers striving for their overthrow.
And all the great conclusions coming near.

Tra poco, quando cesserò d’amarti,
Ritroverò il mio riso …impertinente,
Ritroverò le mie perfidie e l’arti
Di torturare e innamorar la gente.

Tra poco, quando cesserò d’amarti,
Serena, smemorata e senza addio,
Contenta di fuggire e di scordarti
Riprenderò il vagabondaggio mio.

Tra poco, quando cesserò d’amarti,
Scontrandoti per via smorto e severo,

POETRY IN TRANSLATION (CCXLVII): Louis de BERNIÈRES (b. 1954, London), ENGLAND, “Le garçon maudit”, “The doomed Boy”

January 27th, 2014 · Comments Off on POETRY IN TRANSLATION (CCXLVII): Louis de BERNIÈRES (b. 1954, London), ENGLAND, “Le garçon maudit”, “The doomed Boy” · Books, International Media, Poetry, quotations, Translations
