Poetry in Translation (CCCXXXI), Valeria GROSU (1950-2012) ROMANIA/MOLDOVA: “Round in circles”, “Alergare în cerc”

Cercul în care alerg ca şi cum nu există.
Este zi şi noapte ziua şi noaptea
interminabila ultimă sută de metri
voinţa de a te lăsa siluit de regulile ei

As I run round in non-existing circles
day and night, day in day out
the last endless one hundred yards
determined to allow oneself being put to the test by the rules
with one’s shadow running distorted

POETRY IN TRANSLATION (CCXLVIII): IRELAND – Oscar WILDE (1856 – 1900): “Sonnet On Approaching Italy”, “Sonet Italiei”

Sonnet On Approaching Italy
Oscar Wilde (1856, Dublin – 1900, Paris)

I reached the Alps: the soul within me burned,
Italia, my Italia, at thy name:
And when from out the mountain’s heart I came
And saw the land for which my life had yearned,

I laughed as one who some great prize had earned:
And musing on the marvel of thy fame
I watched the day, till marked with wounds of flame
The turquoise sky to burnished gold was turned.

The pine-trees waved as waves a woman’s hair,
And in the orchards every twining spray
Was breaking into flakes of blossoming foam:

But when I knew that far away at Rome
In evil bonds a second Peter lay,
I wept to see the land so very fair.
* * * * *

Dar când, în vechea Romă stau zăcând,
În fiare, sfinţii tăi fiind priponiţi,
Cu lacrimi, am văzut al tău temei.

Poetry in Translation (CCXIII): Francis of ASSISI,(1181/1182, Assisi, Umbria – October 3, 1226, Assisi), Poet of UMBRIA, “Preghiera”, “Prayer”, “Rugăciune”

September 13th, 2013 · Comments Off on Poetry in Translation (CCXIII): Francis of ASSISI,(1181/1182, Assisi, Umbria – October 3, 1226, Assisi), Poet of UMBRIA, “Preghiera”, “Prayer”, “Rugăciune” · International Media, PEOPLE, Poetry, quotations, Translations

Sf. Francisc din Assisi
(1181/82 – 3 Octombrie, 1226)

Doamne, Dumnezeul meu,
daruieşte-mi, nu atât mângâierea, cât putința de a mângâia;
nu atât harul de a fi înțeles, cât să pot înțelege;
nu să fiu iubit, cât să pot iubi.
Căci prin dăruire de sine putem primi,
prin iertare putem fi iertați,
și prin moartea spre moarte putem afla viață veșnică.
Amin

Poetry in Translation (CXXXIV): Paul STERIAN – poet of Romanian Communist Prisons – “I’m drunk again”, “Mă’mbăt mereu”

October 23rd, 2012 · 1 Comment · International Media, PEOPLE, Poetry, Translations

Paul STERIAN – poet of Romanian Communist Prisons

I’m drunk again
with this rich, confusing wine
I’m drunk with God!
God as inn keeper
God as wine
God as drinking mate.
why are you getting me drunk
why are you getting me confused
you heartless inn keeper
unerring companion
you, wine, sweetest poison?
might you be coveting my riches?
take them!
might you steal my thoughts?
take them!
might you take my happiness?
take it!
might you give me
your cross?
I take it!
